Introduction The Convention on Wetlands, known as the Ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental treaty, signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971 "that embodies the commitments of its member countries to maintain the ecological character of their Wetlands of International Importance and to plan for the 'wise use', or sustainable use, of all of the wetlands in their territories." (www.ramsar.org). Wetland sites that meet the criteria can be recognized as Wetlands of International Importance. Worldwide, 1887 locations have been recognized as Ramsar Sites.
