Endangered species of Uganda

Endangered species of Uganda include a number of taxa identified by the Internation Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It should be noted that throughout the world there are only a small fraction of species adequately described and analyzed to articulate the totality of threatened species. Some estimates place the number of threatened species one to two orders of magnitude higher than IUCN lists, simply due to the large number of species that have not yet been described or analyzed.

IUCN classification system
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species provides information on plants and animals that have evaluated against a number of criteria designed to determine their relative risk of extinction. Species for which their is sufficient data are ranked on a scale:
- Extinct (EX)
- Extinct in the Wild (EW)
- Critically Endangered (CR)
- Endangered (EN)
- Vulnerable (VU)
- Near Threatened (NT)
- Least Concern (LC)
Only a small number of the world's plant and animal species have been assessed. However, amphibians, birds, mammals, freshwater crabs, warm-water reef building corals, conifers and cycads have been comprehensively assessed. Species within the categories of Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), and Vulnerable (VU) are termed threatened.
As of July 10, 2009, the IUCN database included 196 threatened species in Uganda which are listed here. Over time, Encyclopedia of Earth articles will be developed for each species.
