Ahmed Zaki Yamani (1930-) was the Saudi Arabian Minister for Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia (1962-1986) as well as former chief spokesman and strategist for the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). He led OPEC during a tumultuous period of price increases and price collapses. He helped orchestrate the sharp increases in 1973-74 and 1980-81 when OPEC’s control over the oil market was strong. He eventually became a moderating influence within OPEC, which was the probable cause of his ouster in 1986 after oil prices collapsed. He founded, and is chairman of, the Centre for Global Energy Studies, a non-profit organization based in London.
