Karl Drais von Sauerbronn (1785-1851) was the German inventor of the velocipede, an early form of the bicycle. The maneuverable machine was constructed entirely of wood and had no pedals. The rider straddled a padded saddle and propelled the vehicle with his feet on the ground, similar to how a modern scooter is propelled. Sauerbronn's device was first exhibited in Paris in 1818.
