Triple bottom line

September 21, 2006, 12:21 am

The phrase "triple bottom line" was coined by John Elkington, co-founder of the business consultancy SustainAbility, in his 1998 book Cannibals with Forks: the Triple Bottom Line of 21st Century Business. (ref Business and Sustainable Development: A Global Guide)

Managing a company against a triple bottom line implies that companies should consider not just financial outcomes--the traditional bottom line--but also environmental and social performance.
