Charles W. Tobias (1920-1996), an American chemical engineer widely regarded as the founder of electrochemical engineering. His initial characterization of nonaqueous electrolytes, and his demonstration that they could electrodeposit reactive metals, initiated a new field of battery research. In 1954, Tobias founded an electrochemical research program at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA). The program made pioneering advances that produced longer lasting batteries, batteries with greater storage capacities, and batteries with greater energy concentrations. This work included fundamental advances in lithium batteries, now widely used in computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices.
