Samuel H. Schurr (1918–2002), a mineral economist and energy historian noted for his pioneering analysis of the role of energy in economic systems. Energy in the American Economy (1960), which he co-authored with Bruce Netschert, was a thorough account of U.S. production and consumption of energy from the mid-19th century on, along with an assessment of future energy-use trends. This work set the standard for similar studies that became popular after the energy price shocks of the 1970s and 1980s. Schurr helped shape Resources for the Future, a think tank in Washington, D.C. that has grown to have great influence in the economic analysis of energy and environmental issues. He later became the Director of the Energy Systems, Environment, and Conservation Division at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, California.
