Reddy, Amulya K. N.
Topics: |
Amulya K. N.Reddy (1930-2006), an Indian electrochemist, turned his attention mid-career to the energy systems of the rural and urban poor in India. He is widely recognized for his emphasis on elevating energy needs as a means of acheiving poverty elimination and sustainable development. Reddy charted a new path, measuring and analyzing nominally mundane problems such as energy requirements for cooking, demonstrating an interactive research mode where the subject of study was also the implementer of results. Because he created institutional forms, both within India and internationally, others are able to follow him. He was founder of the International Energy Initiative in 1991, a Southern-conceived, Southern-led, Southern-located, and a South-North partnership to deliver energy services to the poor. In collaboration with J. Goldemberg, T.B. Johansson, and R.H. Williams, he published Energy for a Sustainable World (1998). He received the Volvo Environment Prize in 2000.
