Since 1996, I have been in the Geography Department at the University of Calgary, where I am now an Associate Professor. I teach undergraduate Physical Geography, Cartography and Biogeography, and Remote Sensing at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
My research focuses in two areas. The first is hypertemporal image analysis techniques, particularly studying cyclical vegetation dynamics as it relates to ecosystem mapping and land use change. Second, I investigate the representation of texture in images and how this can most effectively be deployed to solve automated analysis techniques. I am also interested in both of these topics related to object-oriented image segmentation especially through Definiens eCognition software.
My thirty-year career in teaching has ranged through all levels from elementary through graduate. While employed by for Canada’s National Museums and Parks Canada, I developed exhibits and provided staff training.
I am a board member of the Alberta Native Plant Council and the Alberta Geomatics Group. My professional memberships are currently the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, the Canadian Remote Sensing Society (CASI), the Canadian Association of Geographers, and the Geological Society of America.
