Lawrence K. Duffy, M.S., Ph.D. has been working in the areas of neurochemistry and biochemical toxicology for over 20 years. He has studied the mechanism of various toxins including cholera toxin and Alzheimer’s beta amyloid. He is currently studying the interaction of melatonin, thyroid hormones and toxins on brain development. Since the Exxon Valdez oil spill he has also been working to develop biomarkers appropriate for the brain. He has worked on developing biomarkers for MTBE and benzene exposure and has worked to develop community based participatory research on pollutants and climate change in the North. Dr. Duffy is the Director of the Alaska Specialized Neuroscience Research Program and the Associate Dean in the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Circumpolar Health and is the Executive Secretary for the Arctic Division of AAAS.
