Lester B. Lave, an American economist who performed important research on the costs, benefits, and health risks associated with air pollution (Air pollution emissions), automobile safety standards, and carcinogenic chemicals. He also performed important research on the life cycle of various energy and transportation systems, as well as methods to communicate scientific uncertainty to the public regarding the health and environmental risks of climate change. Lave demonstrated some of the important hidden costs of environmental regulation. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
