Lakes of Malaysia

The lakes of Malaysia are found distributed in a number of the Malaysian states, the majority of which are in Peninsular Malaysia. There is a signifant yield of fish from the freshwater lakes of Malaysia; however, overall catches appear to be on the decline, due to siltation inflow and possibly overfishing. In addition to the large well-defined lakes, Malaysia has a relatively large amount of freshwater swamps and fish farms, which effectively serve as lakes, although many are anthropogenic; the chief purposes of these swampy water bodies are for fish farming and rice cultivation.
