Joseph Francis Joy (1883-1957), an American inventor whose 190 patents revolutionized underground mining mechanization. In 1919, Joy pioneered new concepts in mechanical loading, hydraulics, modern control and power circuits, trackless mining equipment, efficient gearing and seal designs, as well as dozens of other "firsts" in the mining industry. His contributions changed forever the way minerals are mined. Joy’s inventions allowed for the increase in productivity and safety that enabled coal to be a major energy source that fueled the Industrial Revolution from 1910 to 1955 in the U.S.
