User Profile
John Bruno is a marine ecologist and conservation biologist. His research is focused on understanding and conserving the structure and dynamics of marine communities. Dr. Bruno works in a variety of marine habitats including coral reefs, coastal wetland and sand dune plant communities, oyster reefs and seagrass beds. Current projects in the Bruno lab at UNC include investigations of the link between rising ocean temperatures and regional-scale coral disease epidemics, the importance of predator biodiversity in food webs, and the dispersal and meta-community dynamics of marine plants and animals. Dr. Bruno combines synthetic (e.g., meta-analyses) and experimental approaches and does field work in coastal North Carolina, the Florida Keys, Jamaica, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.
Dr. Bruno earned his Ph.D. from Brown University in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in 2000 and was a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he has been since 2001.
