Dresser, Solomon Robert

Solomon Robert Dresser (1842-1911), a U.S. engineer noted for his inventions key to improved recovery of oil and natural gas. In 1880, he patented a cylindrical packer that sealed crude oil from water and other elements in a well, a problem that had long vexed oil producers. He also invented a new type of rubber coupling that connected pipes in such a way that they would not leak natural gas (1891). This invention permitted for the first time the long-range transmission of natural gas from the fields of origin to urban centers for consumption. Due to these developments, Dresser Industries would grow to be a huge commercial success.
