Department of Energy Science Education Enhancement Act of 1990, United States
The Department of Energy Science Education Enhancement Act of 1990 amended the Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977 and encouraged the development of science, mathematics, and engineering education programs through the US Department of Energy (DOE) and its research facilities. The Act directed the DOE to use the personnel, facilities, equipment, and resources within its laboratories to their full potential and ensure greater efficiency in communication between various programs. Communication includes the sharing of equipment and personal information under supervision of the DOE.
Under the Act, Congress allocated US$70 million in 1995 for science education, with a substantial portion of the funding going to DOE laboratories and programs offering undergraduate internships, teacher development programs, K-12 outreach programs, and education technology. By 1996, Congress decreased its budget for science education programs to $20 million. A portion of these funds goes to colleges and universities for the funding of programs, based on competitively reviewed grant proposals.
