James Dehlsen, an American businessman noted for his central role in transforming a fledgling wind power industry into a multibillion-dollar commercial enterprise. In 1980, he founded Zond Energy, which eventually became GE Wind, the largest U.S. wind turbine manufacturer. The entreprenurial spirit remained, and he later founded Clipper Windpower, Inc. in 2001. Dehlsen’s companies are renowned for reducing the cost of wind energy through advances in research and development, finance, and technology. He played a principal role in the initial deployment of wind energy in California, the birthplace of the modern U.S. wind power industry.
