Baguio (Hazards & Disasters)

Baguio is a name sometimes given to tropical cyclones in the Phillipines, especially those occurring from July to November.

The term appears chiefly in the English or American literature regarding meteorology of the Phillipines region; moreover, the term is actually derived derived from the city of Baguio, where an historic 24-hour rainfall of 46 inches occurred during the passage of a tropical cyclone in July 1911.

Baguio is the name of the city where a typhoon passed in 1911, and lent itself to be the Tagalog term for a typhoon. It is not a corruption of bagyo, strictly speaking. Here's a link: http://glossary.ametsoc.org/wiki/Baguio
