Augustine, Norman R.
Norman R. Augustine was born in Denver, Colorado. He received the B.S.E. degree in Aeronautical Engineering and the M.S.E. degree from Princeton University in 1957 and 1959, respectively. He holds Honorary Doctor of Engineering and Science degrees from ten major U.S. universities and colleges.
Mr. Augustine joined the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1958, where he held titles of Program Manager and Chief Engineer. Beginning in 1965, he served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as an Assistant Director of Defense Research and Engineering joining the LTV Missiles and Space Company in 1970, he served as Vice President, Advanced Programs and Marketing. In 1973 he returned to government as Assistant Secretary of the Army and in 1975 as Under Secretary. Mr. Augustine joined Martin Marietta Corporation in 1977, and served as Chairman and COO from 1988 and 1987, respectively, having previously acted as President and Chief Operating Officer. He served as President of Lockheed Martin upon the formation of that company in 1995 and became Chief Executive Officer on January 1, 1996.
Mr. Augustine is Chairman of the American Red Cross, immediate Past President of the Boy Scouts of America, and Chairman of the National Academy of Engineering. He has served as national chairman of the U.S. Savings Bond Campaign; chairman of the Defense Policy Advisory Committee on Trade (DPACT); president of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; president and chairman of the Association of the United States Army; chairman of the Defense Science Board; chairman of the Aeronautics Panel of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board; chairman of the Executive Council on Foreign Diplomacy; chairman of the NASA/White House Committee on the U.S. Space Program; chairman of the NASA Space Systems and Technology Advisory Committee; and as a member of the NASA Advisory Council.
He is a Fellow of the IEEE, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Aeronautical Society, the American Astronautical Society, a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the International Academy of Astronautics.
Mr. Augustine serves on the boards of many corporate, educational, philanthropic, and cultural organizations. He serves as member or chair of advisory committees and councils for numerous educational and research institutions, and for government agencies such as the White House, U.S. Senate, NASA, FAA, and the Departments of Defense, Army, Navy, Air Force, Energy, and Transportation, the General Accounting Office, and NATO. He has received numerous awards, including the Department of Defense's highest civilian decoration, the Distinguished Service Medal.
Mr. Augustine is co-author of The Defense Revolution and author of Augustine's Laws, which has been printed in four languages. In pursuing his hobbies, he has dog-sledded in the Arctic, explored volcanoes in the Antarctic, backpacked in the Canadian and U.S. Rockies, boated the Amazon, hot-air ballooned in Africa, rafted the Grand Canyon, to name but a few adventures. He is married to the former Meg Engman of Stockholm, Sweden. They have a son Greg, who is an electrical engineer, and daughter, Rene, an attorney who is married to former NBA player Mark Alarie.
Mr. Augustine was awarded the 1996 IEEE Founders Medal ´For distinguished and innovative corporate and technical leadership in aerospace, electronics and the defense industry.´
