In radiation transfer, absorptance is the fraction of incoming radiation that is absorbed by a medium. The sum of this, the transmittance (the fraction of incoming radiation that passes through the medium), and the reflectance (the fraction of incoming radiation that is reflected by the medium) must equal unity.
