ALVIN

ALVIN is a deep submersible commissioned on June 5, 1964 at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

This article is written at a definitional level only. Authors wishing to expand this entry are inivited to expand the present treatment, which additions will be peer reviewed prior to publication of any expansion.

It has been used for over a thousand research and rescue missions in the years since it was first launched, most from aboard the tender ship Atlantis II, which was retired from that duty in 1996.
