Sancho II of Portugal

Sancho II of Portugal (? ,1248)or Sancho the Cowled.

The son of Alfonso II[?], he was only 12 years old when he succeeded to the throne. His minority was dominated by pro- and anti-clerical factions. Upon attaining his majority, Sancho proved a capable commander, beginning the conquest of the Algarve. His later policies angered the Church and in 1246 recalcitrant nobles invited Sancho's brother Alfonso III[?], Count of Boulogne to take the throne. Sancho eventually fled to Toledo where he died.
