Alphonso III of Portugal

Afonso III (1210 - 1279) was king of Portugal.

The son of Afonso II, he succeeded his brother, Sancho II, in 1248 after effectively deposing him two years before. Besides making war upon the Moors, he was, like his father, frequently embroiled with the church. In his reign Algarve became part of Portugal following the capture of Faro - Portugal thus becoming the first Iberian Kingdom to complete her reconquasista. The Portuguese Cortes (assembly) is also believed to date from Afonso's reign.
