Lowndes County, Alabama

Lowndes County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of William Lowndes, a member of the United States Congress from South Carolina. As of 2000 the population was 13,473. Its county seat is Hayneville.

History

Lowndes County was established on January 20, 1830.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,878 km² (725 mi²). 1,859 km² (718 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.98% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 13,473 people, 4,909 households, and 3,588 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (19/mi²). There are 5,801 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 25.86% White, 73.37% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. 0.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,909 households out of which 35.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.90% are married couples living together, 25.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.90% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.28.

In the county the population is spread out with 30.20% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 12.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 87.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $23,050, and the median income for a family is $28,935. Males have a median income of $27,694 versus $20,137 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,457. 31.40% of the population and 26.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 41.70% are under the age of 18 and 26.60% are 65 or older.
