Halland

Halland, or or Hallandia, is a traditional province or landskap on the western coast of Sweden. It borders to Västergötland, Småland, Skåne and to the sea of Kattegat. There is also a County of Halland.

History

Chartered cities before 1971:

Historically the province of Halland belonged to the Danish Crown, as a part of Skåneland, togeather with provinces Skåne and Blekinge, which made up the eastern part of the Danish kingdom. Halland became a Swedish province for a period of 30 years in 1645 by the Treaty of Brömsebro[?], and permanently from 1658 by the Treaty of Roskilde.

Geography

The streams of Lagan[?], Ätran[?], Nissan[?] and Viskan[?] flows through the province and reaches the sea in Kattegat. Halland is well known for its good soil and as a agricultural district.

Culture

The Fortress at Varberg was built in the 11th century and improved with higher walls in the 15th century. The last Duke of Halland was Prince Bertil (1912-1997), of the house Bernadotte and son of Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden.

Heraldry

Halland was granted its arms at the time for the funural of Charles X Gustav of Sweden in 1660. The province is a duchy and the arms is represented with a dukal coronet. Blazon: "Azure, a Lion rampant Argent langued, armed and dente Gules."
