The
Aimagh Hazaras are a separate branch of the
Hazara ethnic group in
Afghanistan. While most
Hazaras are
Shia Muslims, the Aimagh, also referred to as Chahar Aimag or Chaar Aimaq, are predominantly
Sunni. Due to centuries of oppression of the
Hazara people, some Aimagh
Hazaras are classified officially as
Tajik.
The Aimagh population in Afghanistan is estimated to be 1-2 million.
