Yolanda Saldivar

Yolanda Saldivar (born 1961) was convicted in 1995 for the murder of Selena Quintanilla in 1994. She is currently serving a life sentence[?] in a Texas jail for Quintanilla's murder.

Saldivar was a registered nurse who met with Selena after a concert in 1993. They quickly became friends and Quintanilla offered her a job as her fan club's president and working at Quintanilla's boutique. As time went by, Quintanilla and Saldivar began to grow apart, and Quintanilla began to lose her trust in Saldivar.

On March 31 of 1994, Saldivar and Quintanilla met at a hotel room in San Antonio. The commonly accepted course of events is that Quintanilla told Saldivar that she was being fired and Saldivar responded by grabbing a gun and shooting Quintanilla. Quintanilla was seen walking wounded across the lobby by hotel staff where she fell on to the floor. She was taken to a local hospital and died several hours later.

Saldivar escaped in a car but was traced and surrounded by police. The image of her in the car, pointing a gun to her head was broadcast live on national TV across the United States.

Saldivar's trial for the murder of Selena Quintanilla was followed closely by the Hispanic community in the United States and was nicknamed The O.J. trial of Hispanics. She was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. When she began her jail term, she alleged she would soon say something about 'the truth' that she knew about Selena but this promise has not been followed up.
