White fly

White fly is a small, white (obviously) fly that feeds on the underside of plant leaves. When you tap the leaf, a swarm of flies will buzz around before re-settling under the leaf.

Rogor, a pesticide, says on the packaging that it controls white fly. However, this writer found it completely ineffectual. Rogor is designed specifically for sap-sucking insects such as aphids, so it was surprising that it did not work.

Pyrethrum spray was similarly ineffectual.

The worst plants for attracting white fly were marrows, such as zuchinni and squashes. The white flies loved these broad leaves. With the marrows in the garden, white flies infested other plants, but when the marrows went, so did the white flies.

The writer has also read that sheets of yellow card covered with petroluem jelly (Vaseline) are effective at controlling white fly.

Reviewers who have had success in controlling white fly are strongly encouraged to contribute to this article!
