WebDAV

WebDAV is an acronym for Distributed Authoring and Versioning Protocol for the World Wide Web is an Internet protocol using the underlying HTTP protocol to remotely administer web sites. It is used by HTML editors and the like for accessing file storage on distant computers.

WebDAV was created by W3C and registered with the IETF as RFC 2518[?] and RFC 3253[?].

Before WebDAV, sites were mostly updated using FTP or ad hoc-protocols such as FrontPage Server Extensions.
