Violet is a town located in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,555.

Geography

Violet is located at 29°54'4" North, 89°53'49" West (29.901244, -89.896860)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.8 km² (4.5 mi²). 10.5 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.57% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 8,555 people, 2,744 households, and 2,266 families residing in the town. The population density is 813.6/km² (2,108.4/mi²). There are 2,918 housing units at an average density of 277.5/km² (719.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 58.29% White, 38.77% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. 4.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,744 households out of which 45.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% are married couples living together, 21.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.4% are non-families. 14.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.10 and the average family size is 3.41.

In the town the population is spread out with 32.4% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,993, and the median income for a family is $36,616. Males have a median income of $32,012 versus $24,799 for females.
