Valencia County, New Mexico

Valencia County is a county located in the U.S. State of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 66,152. Its county seat is Los Lunas6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,767 km² (1,068 mi²). 2,765 km² (1,068 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 66,152 people, 22,681 households, and 17,350 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (62/mi²). There are 24,643 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 66.51% White, 1.27% African American, 3.30% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 23.93% from other races, and 4.55% from two or more races. 54.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,681 households out of which 39.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% are married couples living together, 13.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.50% are non-families. 18.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.25.

In the county the population is spread out with 30.10% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 29.60% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 10.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 100.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,099, and the median income for a family is $37,157. Males have a median income of $30,339 versus $23,132 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,747. 16.80% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.30% are under the age of 18 and 10.80% are 65 or older.
