Townsend is a town located in Oconto County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 963.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 109.9 km² (42.5 mi²). 101.0 km² (39.0 mi²) of it is land and 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.15% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 963 people, 436 households, and 313 families residing in the town. The population density is 9.5/km² (24.7/mi²). There are 1,450 housing units at an average density of 14.4/km² (37.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.51% White, 0.10% African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 436 households out of which 17.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.5% are married couples living together, 5.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.55.

In the town the population is spread out with 16.9% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 17.9% from 25 to 44, 34.8% from 45 to 64, and 26.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 53 years. For every 100 females there are 104.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.
