Sorenson codec

The Sorenson codec is a digital video codec devised by the company Sorenson Media and used by Apple Computers QuickTime and the newest version of Macromedia Flash, a special version called Sorenson Spark.

For a long time the specifications of the codec were not public. Analysis and reimplementation by an FFmpeg developer revealed that the Sorenson codec was a tweaked variant of the H.264 standard. This codec is now supported in FFmpeg.

Previously, the only way to play back Sorenson video was to use Apples QuickTime, or the MPlayer for Unix/Linux, which in turn piggy-backed Microsoft Windows DLL-files.
