Scituate is a town located in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,069.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.5 km² (4.8 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.11% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,069 people, 2,055 households, and 1,383 families residing in the town. The population density is 478.5/km² (1,238.4/mi²). There are 2,189 housing units at an average density of 206.6 persons/km² (534.8 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.76% White, 1.03% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.32% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,055 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 32.7% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 85.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $62,392, and the median income for a family is $75,848. Males have a median income of $53,125 versus $38,910 for females. The per capita income for the town is $29,845. 3.8% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.4% are under the age of 18 and 5.5% are 65 or older.
