Puebla

Puebla is the name of a state of Mexico and of the state's capital city.

The City of Puebla, usually known simply as Puebla, is located just over 100 km south-east of Mexico City at 19.05°N 98.22°W. The estimated population in 2003 was 1,345,500 people. The historic center of the city preserves much Spanish Colonial architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

General Ignacio Zaragoza's army defeated French expeditionary forces near Puebla on May 5, 1862 at the Battle of Puebla.

The State of Puebla borders the Mexican states of Veracruz to the east, Hidalgo State, Mexico State, Tlaxcala, and Morelos to the north, Guerrero to the west, and Oaxaca to the south. The state covers an area of about 33,919 km square. The terrain is mostly mountainous. In 2003 the estimate population was 5,377,800 people. In addition to the city of Puebla, the state includes the city of Cholula and the towns of Acatlan, Atlixco, Chignahuapan, Cuetezalan, Izucan, and Teziutlan. ISO 3166-2 is MX-PUE.
