Örnsköldsvik is a 6418.3
km² big
municipality, and the main city in that municipality, in the county
Västernorrland in northern
Sweden. The total population of the municipality is around 55,702 people where about half of that lives in the central parts of Örnsköldsvik and the rest in the suburbs or smaller towns like
Husum[?],
Köpmanholmen[?] or
Mellansel[?].
The city is situated in the beginning of
Höga Kusten[?], which is a
World heritage. The city is located around 100 km south of
Umeå and 650 km north of
Stockholm. The municipality is mainly forested with some farmland.
Örnsköldsvik was founded as a market town in
1842 and became a city in
1894. The name comes from county governor Per Abraham Örnsköld (
1762-
1769). There are traces of human activity from as early as 7000-8000 years ago.
In Örnsköldsvik there are two universities at present,
Mid-Sweden University College and
Umeå Universitet, where the
university college is the larger one, and
university which has most of its students in Umeå.
