1. A special operation designed to support the Battle of the Bulge by using German soldiers in captured Allied uniforms and vehicles to cause confusion in the rear of the Allied defense. A lack of transport aircraft, uniforms and English-speaking soldiers limited this operation.
Many Grief personnel went into action as a conventional unit using captured equipment. However the effect of the few personnel who infiltrated Allied lines was out of proportion to their numbers.
A rumored assassination mission against Eisenhower kept the Supreme Allied Commander in his headquarters for several days. Personnel captured in Allied uniforms were shot as spies. Executed 16 December 1944. See Wahrung.
