The famous 19th century author George Eliot was born in the village of Astley[?] just outside Nuneaton in 1819. Nuneaton is also the birthplace of film director Ken Loach.
The town was a small village until the industrial revolution in the 19th century when the town developed a large textile industry. Nuneaton was also close to the Leicestershire coalfields which greatly helped the industrial growth of the town.
In the Second World War Nuneaton was bombed heavily by the Luftwaffe due to its close proximity to Coventry, and much of the town was destroyed. The town has since been re-built.
Nuneaton's traditional industries like textiles and manufacturing have declined drastically in the postwar years. Due to its good transport links, Nuneaton is now largely a commuter town for nearby Coventry.
The town is near the M6 and M69[?] motorways. and is served by the West Coast Mainline railway. The Coventry Canal also runs through the town.
