Lower Brule is a town located in Lyman County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 599.

Geography

Lower Brule is located at 44°4'26" North, 99°34'51" West (44.074014, -99.580716)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 km² (0.4 mi²). 0.9 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 599 people, 165 households, and 114 families residing in the town. The population density is 642.4/km² (1,667.7/mi²). There are 182 housing units at an average density of 195.2/km² (506.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 4.84% White, 0.17% African American, 94.82% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.17% from two or more races. 0.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 165 households out of which 46.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 21.2% are married couples living together, 34.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% are non-families. 24.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.60 and the average family size is 4.30.
