Los Alamos, New Mexico

Los Alamos is a town in Los Alamos County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 11,909. It is home to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, a major part of the Manhattan Project. It is the county seat of Los Alamos County6.

Geography

Los Alamos is located at 35°53'28" North, 106°17'52" West (35.891086, -106.297727)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.1 km² (10.9 mi²). 28.1 km² (10.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 11,909 people, 5,110 households, and 3,372 families residing in the town. The population density is 423.4/km² (1,096.2/mi²). There are 5,463 housing units at an average density of 194.2/km² (502.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 89.13% White, 0.44% African American, 0.56% Native American, 4.47% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.01% from other races, and 2.35% from two or more races. 12.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,110 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 6.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 101.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $71,536, and the median income for a family is $86,876. Males have a median income of $65,638 versus $39,352 for females. The per capita income for the town is $34,240. 3.6% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.6% are under the age of 18 and 5.3% are 65 or older.
