Kerning

In typography, kerning is the spacing between letters in a proportional font. A simple proportional font will simply specify the space used by each letter. However, depending on the adjacent letter, the spacing may be reduced to improve the appearance of the letters. For example, "A" and "V" can be placed closer together than "A" and "0". Different letter pairs will have different spacing between them to improve the typographic appearance. Kerning is implicitly part of font design and advanced typographic systems allow the specification of kerning.
