Jackson County, South Dakota

Jackson County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 2,930. Its county seat is Kadoka⁶.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,846 km² (1,871 mi²). 4,841 km² (1,869 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,930 people, 945 households, and 675 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 1,173 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 50.07% White, 0.03% African American, 47.85% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. 0.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 945 households out of which 38.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.40% are married couples living together, 14.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.50% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.08 and the average family size is 3.73.

In the county, the population is spread out with 36.50% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 23.60% from 25 to 44, 20.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 98.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.
