Hubert de Burgh

Hubert de Burgh (~1165 - 1243), 1st Earl of Kent (1226), married three times: (1) Beatrice de Warrenne; (2) Isabel of Gloucester, ex-wife of King John of England (~1217); (3) Margaret Dunkeld, daughter of King William I of Scotland (1221). With his third wife he had a daughter Margaret (~1226-1243), called "Megotta."

Hubert was a Justiciar of England and Ireland. He was known for his integrity, especially after he refused to kill or maim Prince Arthur of Brittany when King John wanted his nephew removed from the line of succession so John could take the throne. When William Marshal died in 1219, it fell to Hubert to take over on behalf of King Henry III who was still a minor.
