Hill City, Kansas

Hill City is a city located in Graham County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,604. It is the county seat of Graham County6.

Geography

Hill City is located at 39°22'2" North, 99°50'44" West (39.367319, -99.845558)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,604 people, 696 households, and 448 families residing in the city. The population density is 665.9/km² (1,716.3/mi²). There are 795 housing units at an average density of 330.1/km² (850.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.33% White, 3.43% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 696 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 32.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.3% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 25.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,236, and the median income for a family is $36,500. Males have a median income of $26,207 versus $18,295 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,989. 11.1% of the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line.
