Heilsberg

Heilsberg was founded in Prussia in 1240 and in 1306 it became the seat for the Prince-Bishop of Ermeland (Latin Warmia,Varmia) and remained the seat for 500 years.

In 1807 a battle took place at Heilsberg between the French under Murat and Soult and the Russians and Prussians under Bennigsen. After the defeat of Napoleon and the removal of the French occupation Prussia joined the other German states to form the German Union (Deutsche Bund) , and in 1871 lead the formation of the German empire (Deutsche Reich).

Overrun by Soviet troops in 1945 it is since then known as Lidzbark Warminski, Warmia, in northeastern Poland and is situated 38 miles south of Koenigsberg, today Kaliningrad.
