Initially it reprinted a large part of its material from the French magazine Metal Hurlant[?], with comic strips by such artists as Enki Bilal, Jean Giraud ('Moebius'), and Phillippe Druillet[?], together with long-running serials by Richard Corben and Matt Howarth[?].
Most of the magazine's stories are based in science fiction and fantasy themes. But their content is often so graphically violent and openly pornographic that many argue that its distribution should be prohibited to minors. Despite these objections, Heavy Metals sale, in the US at least, is not restrained to adults only.
