The
Free Software Foundation (FSF) is a
foundation founded in 1985 that is dedicated to producing and promoting
free software. It was founded by
Richard Stallman, and works primarily on the
GNU project. The FSF focuses primarily on developing new free software as opposed to distributing whatever may be available at the time.
On November 25, 2002 the FSF launched the FSF Associate Membership program.
