Edward Schreyer

Edward Schreyer (born December 21, 1935, Beausejour[?], Manitoba) is a former Governor-General of Canada (1979-1984) and Premier of Manitoba (1969-1977)

His political career began with his election to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a member of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, representing the constituency of Brokenhead, from 1958 until 1965. Later in 1965, he ran as a member of the New Democratic Party and won election to the House of Commons.

In 1969, Schreyer returned to provincial politics, elected on June 8 as leader of the New Democratic Party of Mantioba. and subsequently served as Premier of Manitoba.

When he became Governor-General at the age of 43, he was the first ever Governor-General from Manitoba.

Following his term as Governor-General, Schreyer became Canadian High Commissioner to Australia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. He held those positions until 1988.
