Eärendil married Elwing, the daughter of Dior, after the fall of Gondolin. His sons were Elrond and Elros. He went with Elwing to Aman to get help to defeat Morgoth. After Beren and Lúthien defeated Morgoth, Eärendil took the Silmaril that they retrieved from Angband and set sail across the sky in his ship, Vingilot. His star is the one the Elves speak of in the Third Age. He is also known as "the Blessed" and "the Bright". His name means "Lover of the Sea".

The story of Eärendil is told in The Silmarillion.
