Deckchair.com

Deckchair.com used to be located on:
15th Floor Penthouse,
89 Albert Embankment,
London

And are an on-line travel company. When located in this building, they employed about 80 staff.

The building specs were as follows:

The interior is purpose designed to resemble a beach or play area. A 60 m long space is organised into a non-hierarchical landscape of differentiated zones. Each zone has its own programmatic identity and exists without concrete spatial boundaries.

Transparency is a major issue: at deckchair.com decisions are taken together, company strategies are worked out in teams. The company directors have waived the idea of a personal office in favour of a series of multi-tasking glass cubes. The cubes provide acoustic separation yet still allow for visual continuity.

Fixed desk spaces are generally replaced by the idea of ‘personal harbours’; a networked computer, internet, fax and telephone connection. Pedestals on coasters store personal belongings on the move.

All furniture is custom made, ergonomic and brightly coloured (there are even some deckchairs in the reception!). A ‘media lounge’ close to reception acts as the creative hub of the office providing a stimulating environment for informal meetings.

Other On-Line travel firms include: Lastminute.com, Travelselect.com, Travelstore.com
